How to Organise Table Tennis Training for Groups and Classes

Teaching table tennis to one player is relatively straightforward. A coach can play directly with the student or use multiball feeding, observe almost every stroke, control the pace and correct technical problems immediately.
Teaching a group is different. Whether you are coaching 10 players at a club or academy, 30 students in a school PE class or a larger university group, the challenge is not simply deciding which table tennis drills to use. You must keep every player active, provide worthwhile practice and allow players of different abilities to progress—all while one coach may be responsible for the whole group.
A well-organised class therefore needs to balance three things: practice time, practice quality and coaching attention.
How Group Table Tennis Training Is Usually Organised
Most table tennis classes follow a familiar structure. The session begins with a physical warm-up, sometimes followed by basic movement or shadow exercises. Players are then divided by ability and paired with someone at approximately the same level.
Once everyone is on a table, the class may begin with forehand and backhand rallies before progressing to the main technical objective for the day.
A typical session might follow this sequence: Warm-up → forehand and backhand practice → introduction of a new skill → structured drills → match play or games
For experienced players, this approach can work very well. The limitation becomes more noticeable when coaching beginners and intermediate players.
The Biggest Problem: Your Practice Partner Affects the Quality of Your Practice
Imagine that today’s lesson is about learning a technically correct forehand drive. The coach demonstrates the stance, racket angle, timing, contact point and weight transfer. The student understands what they are supposed to do and begins practising with another student.
But the training partner is also a beginner. The first ball arrives to the forehand, the second lands near the middle, the third is short, the fourth is too long, the fifth carries unexpected spin and the sixth misses the table.
Instead of repeating the movement the coach has just taught, the player starts reaching, adjusting and improvising simply to keep the rally going. The exercise may look active because two students are hitting many balls, but they may not be repeating the movement the coach intended them to learn.
Why Repetition Matters When Learning a New Skill
When a player first learns a movement, reducing unnecessary variability can make it easier to concentrate on the movement itself. With a reasonably predictable incoming ball, the player can pay closer attention to stance, timing, racket position, body rotation and contact.
Specific feedback also matters. A systematic review of physical-education research found that feedback improves students’ motor-skill learning compared with no feedback. See Zhou et al. (2021).
This does not mean that players should practise exactly the same ball forever. As technique becomes more stable, practice should become more variable and representative of real table tennis. Research on contextual interference suggests that repetitive practice can support performance during initial acquisition, while greater variation may improve retention and transfer. The evidence is less clear-cut for complex sports than for simple laboratory tasks, so progression should match the player’s level rather than follow a rigid rule. See Czyż et al. (2024).
A practical progression for coaches is: Control the movement → add movement → add variation → add decision-making → apply the skill in match play
For example, a beginner might first practise a forehand from one position. The exercise can then progress to forehands from two positions, less predictable placement and finally a game situation in which the player must decide whether to use a forehand or backhand. One Traditional Solution: The Coach Becomes the Feeder
Many coaches address the consistency problem by dedicating one table to direct coaching. Students rotate through the table while the coach feeds or blocks balls to them.
The advantage is clear: an experienced coach can usually provide a more consistent ball than another beginner. However, the coach now has several jobs at once. They must feed accurately, observe the student’s technique, provide corrections and remain aware of the rest of the class.
Ideally, the coach’s attention should be on the player: their feet, body position, racket angle, timing, contact and recovery. When part of that attention is required to maintain the rally or feed the next ball, small technical details are easier to miss.
This is where a table tennis robot or training system can be particularly useful.
Why Table Tennis Robots Are Useful for Coaching
A good table tennis robot can repeatedly deliver a similar ball to the same area. Depending on the model, the coach may be able to control:
- Ball placement
- Speed
- Spin
- Frequency
- Trajectory or arc
This makes a robot valuable when a player is learning or correcting a technique. Instead of reacting to an unpredictable partner, the student knows approximately where the next ball will arrive and can concentrate on performing the movement correctly.
At the same time, the coach is no longer responsible for feeding every ball. The robot handles the repetition; the coach can focus on coaching.
During a forehand lesson, for example, the coach can stand beside the student and concentrate on knee position, weight transfer, contact in front of the body and recovery after each stroke. In a group session, the robot table can therefore become a dedicated technical coaching station.
But a Table Tennis Robot Solves Only Half the Problem
A conventional robot can control the ball coming to the player. But what happens to the ball going away from the player? A student may return 50 balls, but where did those returns land? Did they reach the intended area? Were they too long, too short or drifting toward the middle? Did accuracy fall as the player increased speed?
Producing the stroke is only one part of the skill. Players must eventually control placement as well. They should progress from ‘return the ball’ to ‘return this ball to this part of the table.’
Interactive targets and performance measurement can make robot training more complete by adding an objective for the outgoing ball as well as consistency for the incoming ball.
From a Ball Machine to a Training System

Step 1: Create the Class
In Group Mode, the coach creates a class—for example, ‘Beginners, Ages 9–11’—and adds the students. The group can then be reused across the course rather than rebuilt for every lesson.
Step 2: Set Each Player’s Handedness
The coach can record whether each student is right- or left-handed. For structured exercises, Fastpong can automatically mirror both the target positions and the integrated robot’s incoming-ball placement for a left-handed player. The coach does not need to rebuild the drill whenever a different player reaches the station.

Step 3: Choose What the Class Will Practise
The coach selects either a complete session containing several exercises or one exercise focused on the day’s technical objective. Fastpong includes built-in training, and coaches can also create their own exercises and sessions.
With the integrated system, the app can configure the robot’s placement, spin, speed and arc for each exercise. During a group class, this reduces the time spent stopping the lesson to change settings manually.

Step 4: Let Students Select Their Name
When group training begins, the students in that class appear in the player list. Each player selects their name before starting, so the results are recorded against the correct profile rather than mixed with the rest of the class.
The exercise stops when that player’s turn is complete. The next student selects their own name and starts, allowing the rotation to continue without requiring the coach to manage every changeover. Over time, this builds an individual training history for each student.

Example: A Two-Hour Table Tennis Class With 10 Students
Imagine one coach is teaching a two-hour class with 10 students, five tables and one Fastpong system. The students are divided into five pairs of approximately equal ability.
The day’s objective is to introduce two-point forehand footwork, but the coach first wants to reinforce the basic forehand technique taught in the previous lesson.
0–10 Minutes: General Warm-Up
The whole group completes a physical warm-up followed by simple table tennis movement and shadow strokes. The coach briefly reviews the key points from the previous forehand lesson.
10–60 Minutes: Forehand Review
All five pairs begin practising. Four pairs work on conventional tables while one pair starts at the Fastpong station, configured to deliver the ball repeatedly to the forehand position.
At this station, the coach can concentrate on technical corrections instead of feeding balls or managing the exercise. Every 10 minutes, the groups rotate. After 50 minutes, every pair has spent 10 minutes at the technical coaching station while remaining active on the other tables for the rest of the rotation.
The robot station does not replace the rest of the class. It becomes one high-quality coaching station within it.
60–70 Minutes: Teach the New Skill
The coach brings the class together and demonstrates the new exercise: forehands from two positions. One ball is sent toward the wider forehand and the next toward the middle.
The objective is no longer only to perform the forehand stroke. The player must move, establish the correct position, execute the stroke and recover for the next ball. The coach demonstrates the footwork pattern and highlights the most important technical points.
70–120 Minutes: Two-Point Forehand Rotation
The five groups begin rotating again. The Fastpong station is changed to the two-point forehand exercise, and each pair spends 10 minutes working with the system.
By the end of the class, every student has practised the new movement with controlled incoming balls while the coach has been able to observe and correct their technique. Meanwhile, the other students have remained active rather than waiting in a line for their turn with the coach.
This is one of the simplest ways to integrate a table tennis training robot into a group class.

Use Data as Feedback—not Just as a Score
After training, the coach can review target accuracy, returned-ball speed and landing-position heatmaps. The data can support feedback, motivation and exercise planning, but it should not become an end in itself.
For younger players, a ‘player of the day’ challenge can make repetitive technical practice more engaging. However, simply rewarding the hardest hit may encourage speed without control. More useful challenges might include:
- Highest target accuracy
- Greatest accuracy improvement since the previous lesson
- Best accuracy while gradually increasing speed
- Most consistent landing pattern across repeated attempts
This gives players at different levels something meaningful to work toward. A beginner who improves from 35% accuracy to 55% may have made more significant progress than the strongest player in the group who remains at 80%.

Measuring Progress Across a Three-Month Course
The same approach becomes more valuable over a longer programme. At the beginning of a school term, academy block or club course, the coach can run a standard assessment covering areas such as:
- Basic forehand accuracy
- Basic backhand accuracy
- Two-point footwork
- Controlled attacking speed
- Reaction training
The assessment can be repeated at the end of the course. Because Fastpong stores individual performance and class statistics, the coach can compare results over time and generate reports showing how players have developed.
That information can serve several audiences:
- A teacher can demonstrate learning outcomes to a school or university department.
- A club or academy can show parents how a junior player is progressing.
- A coach can use the results to decide what each player should work on next.
- A student can see measurable evidence that practice is producing improvement.
Instead of simply saying, ‘You’ve improved,’ the coach can show the player how they have improved—and where the next opportunity lies.

Technology Should Give Coaches More Time to Coach
The purpose of technology in table tennis training is not to replace the coach. A robot cannot watch a student’s posture and understand why their forehand is breaking down. A statistic cannot decide by itself what the player needs to learn next. Those are coaching decisions.
Technology has a different role. A table tennis robot can remove the repetitive task of feeding hundreds of consistent balls. Interactive targets can give players a clear objective and record what happens to their returns. Class-management software can organise students and keep their training histories in one place.
That leaves the coach with more time to observe, correct, teach and motivate. For group table tennis training, that can make the difference between keeping a class busy and helping every player improve.
