5 Table Tennis Robot Drills for Better Match Play

A table tennis robot is an excellent way to practise technique, footwork and consistency. But there is a common weakness in robot practice: players can become so focused on returning the incoming ball that they stop concentrating on where they are sending it.
A robot controls the ball you receive. Fastpong also gives you a target for the ball you return — and measures what happened.

The target illuminates as the robot sends the ball. This means that from the beginning of the ball's trajectory, you need to register where your return should go, while still tracking the incoming ball and preparing your stroke.
That is much closer to competitive table tennis. In a match, you cannot concentrate only on the ball coming towards you. You also need awareness of your opponent, the available space and where you want your next shot to land.
And that is the ultimate objective of training: not simply to become better at robot exercises, but to play better and win more matches.
Research also supports the potential value of visual training in sport. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 27 randomised controlled trials involving 669 athletes found that visual training significantly improved decision-making response time and sport-specific performance.
From Repetition to Match-Relevant Training
Combining a programmable table tennis robot with Fastpong's interactive targets allows an exercise to bring together:

- the stroke you should play
- an illuminated target for your return
- whether that target was hit or missed
- the speed of the returned ball

Just as importantly, the combination and order of the strokes can reproduce patterns that occur during competitive table tennis. A push might lead into an opening topspin, a backhand into a forehand from another position, or a short ball into an attack requiring in-and-out footwork.

1. Forehand Cross-Court Accuracy
Fastpong Beginner Lesson 1 – FH Cross
Pattern:
The robot supplies suitable balls to the forehand. The player returns each ball towards the illuminated cross-court target.
What it trains
- Forehand technique
- Consistent contact
- Placement
- Small positioning adjustments
- Recovery for the next ball
How it progresses
Early exercises can use a relatively large target formed from several tiles. As the lesson progresses, the targets become more demanding, eventually requiring much more precise placement.
Because the target illuminates as the incoming ball is sent, you must identify the required placement before playing the stroke, rather than simply hitting the ball and seeing where it goes.
Why it matters in a match
Being able to deliberately place a forehand cross-court allows you to start controlling where your opponent has to move and therefore how the point develops.

2. Forehand–Backhand Transition

Once your individual forehand and backhand strokes are reasonably reliable, the next challenge is connecting them together without losing control of placement.
Pattern: FH → BH → FH → BH
Later exercises can introduce more complex sequential and random patterns.
What it trains
- Switching between forehand and backhand
- Recovery after each stroke
- Small positional adjustments
- Maintaining placement while changing strokes
- Reacting to increasingly less predictable sequences
Fastpong targets
The incoming ball tells you which stroke is required while the illuminated tile tells you where the return should go. You therefore have to process both Where is the ball going? And where am I sending it?
As the exercises progress, the target can become smaller or change from one shot to the next, while later patterns introduce sequential and random variation.
Why it matters in a match
Real opponents do not normally allow you to repeat your favourite stroke from exactly the same position. They move you between forehand and backhand while you are simultaneously trying to move them. This exercise trains the stroke transition without allowing return placement to become an afterthought.

3. Backhand + Two Forehands from Different Positions

Pattern:
BH → FH → FH
with the strokes played from different positions.
What it trains
- Footwork
- Positioning
- Recovery
- Moving and repositioning around your end of the table
- Connecting several attacking strokes
This is not simply a left-to-right shuffle. The player must move around the playing area and reposition in relation to the table to reach each stroke correctly.
Fastpong targets
Each part of the sequence can have its own target. The backhand might require one placement, the first forehand another and the second forehand another. The player must therefore combine movement around the table with deliberate control of the other end of the table.
Why it matters in a match
Playing a good attack does not mean the point is finished. Your opponent may return the ball to a completely different position, requiring immediate recovery and further movement.
Practising the complete combination helps develop the habit of preparing for the next shot, rather than admiring the one you just played.

4. Four-Stroke Topspin–Push Combination

This exercise shows why the order of strokes can be as important as the individual techniques.
Pattern: FH topspin → FH push → BH topspin → BH push
What it trains
Within a short sequence, the player must change:
- forehand to backhand
- topspin to push to topspin
- body position
- return placement
The player cannot settle into the rhythm of repeating one technique.
Why it matters in a match
Competitive rallies constantly change. Spin, placement and the appropriate stroke can all be different from one ball to the next. Training a combination repeatedly helps connect techniques that may originally have been learned separately, so that a similar sequence during a match feels familiar rather than new.

5. Third-Ball Attack with In-and-Out Footwork

Third-ball attack is an excellent example of practising a pattern of play rather than three unrelated strokes.
Pattern: FH flick → BH topspin → FH topspin
combined with in-and-out footwork.
What it trains
The player moves in towards the table for the shorter ball, then recovers into a suitable position for the following topspin strokes. That recovery is critical. A good first attack is much less useful if you finish it in the wrong position for the next ball.
Why it matters in a match
This is much closer to competitive training than simply repeating three techniques separately. You are rehearsing a combination in an order that can occur during a real point, together with the movement needed to connect those strokes.
The objective is not to become good at performing a robot exercise. It is to make the same pattern easier to recognise and execute when the opportunity appears in a real match.

Robot Training Should Complement Match Play — Not Replace It
No robot can completely reproduce a real opponent.
An opponent can disguise spin, change tactics, react to your previous shot and deliberately make it difficult for you to play the stroke you want. Robot training should therefore complement coaching, partner practice and competitive play, not replace them.
But robot practice does not have to mean mechanically repeating isolated strokes. By combining changing incoming balls, realistic stroke sequences, footwork and deliberate return placement, you can practise many of the patterns and movements that occur during competition.
The objective is to make those situations familiar enough that when a similar pattern develops in a match, you are better prepared to recognise it and respond.
Practise the Combination, Not Just the Stroke
Competitive table tennis is not made up of isolated forehands and backhands. Every shot is connected to what happened before it and what is likely to happen next.
You need to: read the incoming ball → identify your target → move into position → select the stroke → control the placement → recover → prepare for the next ball
That is why the combination and order of strokes matter: you are training complete movement and attacking sequences, not just individual shots.
When a similar opportunity appears at an important stage of a real match, you do not want to be working out the movement or stroke sequence for the first time. You want to recognise the pattern because you have repeatedly practised it already.
Measure Whether You Are Actually Improving
Simply knowing that you hit 500 forehands does not tell you whether your forehand has improved. Fastpong gives you quantitative information about what happened during your training.
Accuracy: Did You Hit the Target?
Fastpong records whether the illuminated target was hit or missed. Your accuracy percentage therefore tells you how often you successfully hit the required target.

Speed: How Fast Was the Return?
Fastpong also measures the speed of the returned ball associated with the target. This can be particularly useful for attacking strokes.
Speed should not be considered in isolation — hitting harder is not automatically better if control disappears — but it can help answer an important training question:
Can I increase the speed of this stroke while still consistently hitting the intended target?

Heatmap: Where Did the Misses Actually Go?
A hit/miss percentage tells you whether you reached the target. The Fastpong heatmap shows where returns actually landed. When you miss, is the ball consistently to the left or right, too short, too long or completely off the table?
This helps identify patterns in your mistakes rather than simply counting them.

Filter by Stroke Type
Results can be filtered according to stroke characteristics, including forehand, backhand, topspin, backspin and serve, helping you identify which types of stroke are improving and where problems remain.
Progressively Harder Training
Fastpong lessons are designed to become more challenging as the player's ability develops. A player may begin with a relatively straightforward incoming ball and a large target made from several illuminated tiles. As the exercises progress:
- incoming balls become more difficult
- targets become smaller
- target positions and sequences change and become less predictable
- more advanced strokes are introduced
- stroke combinations become more complex
- footwork becomes more demanding
The objective is not simply to become exceptionally good at performing one easy exercise. It is to maintain good technique, movement and placement while the demands of the exercise increase.
Left-Handed? Fastpong Mirrors the Exercise Automatically
If you specify that you are left-handed, Fastpong automatically mirrors the exercise for you. That includes both the target positions and the placement of the balls from the integrated robot, so the exercise works correctly for either a right-handed or left-handed player.

From Robot Training to Winning More Matches
Ultimately, robot training, statistics and even the Fastpong exercises themselves are not the objective. Playing better table tennis is.
Quantitative data helps show which skills are improving and which still need attention, but competition provides the real test. Better training should help you place returns more deliberately, make fewer unforced errors, recover more effectively, recognise familiar patterns earlier and execute attacking combinations with greater confidence.
A robot determines: What ball do I receive?
Fastpong adds: Where should I put it? Did I hit the target? How consistently? How fast was the return? Where did my misses go? And how does my performance compare with last week or last month?
The goal is not simply to hit more balls but to practise the strokes, movement, placement and combinations you want to reproduce in a match – then measure your progress, understand your mistakes and increase the challenge. Ultimately, the aim is simple: win more of the points you used to lose, and win more matches.
